Richard Carl “Dick” Oswant, age 99 of Pittsburgh, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 14, 2024. He was born May 11, 1925, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late John J. and Mary R. Oswant. His sister, Lorraine DeVilling, and brother, John E. Oswant, preceded him in death.
He was the beloved husband for 62 years of the late Margaret Burtt Oswant. He was the loving father of Penny (Gerald) Martin of Greenbelt, MD, Rachel (Stephen) Cupcheck of Pittsburgh, and Richard (Victoria) Oswant of Cave Creek, AZ; grandfather of Lindsay (Luke) Thorwart, Heather (Mauno) Kork, Wade (Betty Jeanne) Cupcheck, Casey Oswant and Kyle Oswant; great- grandfather of Caleb, Susannah, Bethany, James and Samuel Thorwart, Annika Kork, and Jack Cupcheck. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was a graduate of South Hills High School and Carnegie Institute of Technology, now Carnegie-Mellon University. He served overseas in the U.S. Army during World War II as First Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers. Following graduate study at the University of Pittsburgh, he taught English and written communications at the college level for several years. His career broadened to include management of advertising and marketing communications for PPG Industries, Chemical Division, and management of fundraising campaigns for non-profits with Ketchum, Inc. Dick was a member of the First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh, where earlier he had served for many years on the Board of Trustees.
In addition to his great love for family and friends, Dick had a life-long passion for reading and learning, and for the arts, particularly music and opera, and good wine. In his earlier years he belonged to the Pittsburgh Savoyards and the Tom Fallon Singers. He volunteered a great deal of time working with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Opera, the Carnegie Museum, the Carnegie Science Center, and the Shadyside Concert Series.
A memorial service for Dick will be held on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at 11:00 AM in the Chapel at Longwood at Oakmont, 500 Route 909, Verona, PA, 15147. Interment private.
