Cheryl was born December 27, 1952 in Waterbury, CT, daughter of the late Robert J. and Jane (Kelly) West. Cheryl graduated from Quinnipiac University with a degree in Accounting. Prior to her retirement she was employed as an accountant and tax preparer for Charette Makowski & Co. of Middlebury.
Cheryl was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, wife, and dear friend to many. She was a loyal and hardworking woman who sometimes said little with words, but demonstrated her deep love with actions, advice, and thoughtful gestures. She asked for little, but gave a lot. She had an enormous heart, a wry and sarcastic sense of humor, and an unassuming way about her that put others at ease.
For many years, Cheryl was desperate for grandchildren – she inquired frequently of her sons, Bryan and Kyle, when they’d settle down and make her a grandmother. She welcomed their significant others, Heather and Kylie, with open arms as the daughters she’d never had. She was overjoyed to become a doting Nana twice over to grandsons Jacob and Riley, and took pride and pleasure in seeing her sons become strong and loving fathers. She viewed her family as her greatest accomplishment.
Beyond her retirement, Cheryl continued doing tax preparation work that kept her in touch with many dear friends and acquaintances through the years. Though tax season was busy, she had a story connected to each client and their shared history. In her spare time, Cheryl enjoyed unexpected tag sale finds, family game nights, competitive reality shows, gardening, a timely margarita, and perfect days at the beach. She was a great keeper of family photos, and loved reminiscing over many happy memories.
Born and raised in Connecticut, Cheryl spent the last decade enjoying warmer weather and sunny Florida activities. She returned to CT in 2023, making her home in Wethersfield with family so that she could be closer to her sons and grandsons. We were tremendously grateful to have that quality time with her, and that she was able to be present for birthday and holiday celebrations this past year.
Cheryl is survived by her husband, Arnold W. Flannery, Jr. of Sebastian, FL; her sons, Bryan Flannery and his wife Heather of Wethersfield, CT; Kyle Flannery and his fiancée Kylie Hatch of Brookfield, CT; her grandsons Jacob Flannery and Riley Flannery; her brother Bob West and his wife Beth of Arizona; her sister Sandra Gebhardt of Kansas, as well as many dear nieces, nephews, extended family, and lifelong friends.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00pm on Saturday, May 18th, at the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Boulevard, Wethersfield. Relatives and friends are welcome to calling hours from 10:00 am – noon, immediately preceding the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in honor of Cheryl to support the work of Hartford Interval House, offering intervention, support, and prevention efforts to victims of domestic violence and their families.
